I first discovered this scene while strolling through Ashridge Forest on a hot summer’s day. I was immediately inspired by the potential for an image, but waited for an opportunity to expose film on the scene when it was looking at its best in flat light as the first signs of autumn started to set in.

Extremely careful consideration was given to the camera position, perspective and focal plane to ensure the fallen tree’s contours aligned appropriately with the tall, scarred pine trunks and supporting foliage.

The image was made with my Chamonix view camera with a Fujinon A 180mm f/9 lens and Fuji Velvia 50 slide film.
