Burnham Beeches, Buckinghamshire

Burnham Beeches is a stunning ancient woodland in Buckinghamshire with some of the oldest trees in the UK. It’s an area of woodland that I’ve been frequenting since 2009, but it’s a place that still feels unfamiliar to me. Vast in its diversity, both in terms of wildlife and the range of different tree species, Burnham is rich in atmosphere and mood. The pollarded ancient oaks and beeches are a particular highlight, but they are notoriously difficult to photograph – I’ve been waiting for the right conditions for years. Even after 10 years of visiting the Beeches, I still feel like I’ve only just scratched the surface.
