Epping Forest, Essex
Epping Forest is the largest woodland in Greater London and is one of the largest ancient woodlands in England. It was once designated a royal hunting forest, but following the devastation of neighbouring Hainault Forest, it was spared.
Home to an incredible number of ancient beech, hornbeam and oak pollards, Epping is a vast and diverse habitat spreading almost 6,000 acres. It’s also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including both the lesser and greater spotted woodpeckers.
